In the Classroom

Mr. Varga, along with the Anthony Wayne
technology department, are pleased to announce a unique
learning opportunity for the junior high. Using software
purchased from Aspyr Media, Inc, and hardware/technology
from Apple, the staff was able to create a simulated learning
environment where students compete against one another.
In groups of three, students will start from the dawn of time,
4000 B.C., and attempt to build a civilization that will stand
the test of time. Along the way, they will encounter problems such
as barbarians, population growth, lack of resources, economic
troubles, and, of course, relations with neighboring and distant
empires. The group will act like a government cabinet, each
charged with their own area of expertise: 1) Trade and Finances,
2) Culture and Technology, and 3) Domestic and Foreign Affairs.
Together, these groups will need to find the right balance of power
within their group and make the right decisions for their people.
In the end, students will learn to manage many of the problems
that civilizations faced throughout time. Some of them will be
predictable, while others will be difficult to foresee. Many
learning activities will occur both before and after the game,
including analysis of game data and the production of a
State of the Civilization address detailing the relative success of
their civilization. For more information, feel free to contact
Mr. Varga about this exciting new opportunity.
