Hoops for Heart
Hoops for Heart has been a tremendous success here at Monclova for the past several years. Hoops for Heart is a fundraising program aimed at raising money for the American Heart Association. Why do we participate?
- Heart disease is the #1 killer; stroke is the #3 killer and leading cause of serious disability.
- Congenital cardiovascular defects are the most common cause of infant death from birth defects.
- Cardiovascular disease ranks as the #2 cause of death for children under age 15.
- Funds are used for research and local health care.
- Tremendous success (just look below!!!)
Monclova has been among the top schools in the STATE of Ohio for the past three years. We started participating in the 2002-2003 school with Jump Rope for Heart. The past three years we have done Hoops for Heart and everything really took off from there. We raised over $10,000 in 2003-2004 during the event and that was the 4th highest amount raised in the state. In 2004-2005 we raised over $13,000 during our event and that was 3rd highest amount in the state. Finally, last year we rose close to $17,000 and became the second highest contributor to the American Heart Association in the state of Ohio last year. Monclova and the Anthony Wayne school district are honored every year in Columbus at an awards ceremony for the outstanding efforts of the students and the community. Hoops for Heart collections and events usually begin in March. This year we are aiming towards #1.
Every year students receive various prizes from the AHA based on the amount of money they raise. I also offer incentives based on classroom success. For example, the top forth grade fundraiser from each classroom gets to participate in a student/teacher basketball against the forth grade teacher. Last year I also received a Mohawk because we exceeded our overall goal of raising $15,000. <back>
